Social media will serve as the primary platform for patients to gather health information and to manage their health in the future, according to Jeff Arnold, the founder of WebMD, who delivered a late afternoon “View from the Top” address today at the 2011 HIMSS exhibition and conference in Orlando, Fla.
The sparsely attended address essentially was a pitch for Arnold's latest venture Sharecare, an interactive website that offers patients access to health information from well-known healthcare providers and organizations. Arnold is co-founder, chairman and chief architect of Sharecare. The company's other co-founder is TV personality Dr. Mehmet Oz, or “Dr. Oz,” who provided a videotaped testimonial for Sharecare as part of Arnold's presentation. The other partners in the venture are Harpo Studios, HSW International, Sony Pictures Television and Discovery Communications.
