Billionaire philanthropist Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong has acquired Vitality, a Cambridge, Mass.-based company that developed Internet-connected pharmaceutical pill bottles, according to a Vitality news release announcing the deal. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Vitality CEO David Rose and President Joshua Wachman will continue as the company's top executives. Rose and Wachman co-founded Vitality.
In 2010, Soon-Shiong and two Arizona universities launched the Healthcare Transformation Institute, a not-for-profit health policy organization, with funding from Soon-Shiong. Former Mayo Clinic CEO and President Dr. Denis Cortese was named president of the institute.
Soon-Shiong also was No. 12 on Modern Healthcare's 2010 list of the 50 Most Powerful Physician Executives. Dr. David Blumenthal, outgoing head of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, was No. 1 on the list.
