Thirty-three systems were evaluated for the list but did not score high enough to make SDI's Top 100 IHNs for 2011.
2011 SDI Top 100 IHNs: The Best of the Rest
The systems are included in the firm's fifth annual Best of the Rest list, which recognizes systems that scored at least 50 points in the ranking system but fell short of the top 100 ranking. The Midwest, Northeast and South regions each have 10 systems, while the West has three.
Some of the systems on the list are unlikely to make it onto the top 100 because of their smaller comparative size, SDI officials say. Others are on their way up to the main list, or have fallen off the Top 100 because of changes in their performance or overall integration.
Last year, the Best of the Rest list included only 18 systems, compared with 61 in 2009.
- For the 2011 rankings, only three health systems made the Best of the Rest list for the West region. The highest scorer was 23-hospital Sutter Health, Sacramento, Calif., which fell from No. 38 on the top 100 in 2010.
- In the South, FirstHealth of the Carolinas, a three-hospital system based in Pinehurst, N.C., ranked highest in that regional Best of the Rest ranking.
- In the Northeast, two-hospital Heritage Valley Health System, Beaver, Pa., had the highest score in that regional ranking.
- In the Midwest, five-hospital Summa Health System, Akron, Ohio, took the top placement, falling from No. 98 in the top 100 in 2010.
