Dr. Charles Saunders, a former CEO and chairman of the Broadlane Group, was named head of strategic diversification, a new position, at Aetna.
Aetna hires former Broadlane CEO
Saunders, whose age was not available from Aetna, most recently was an executive in residence at private-equity company Warburg Pincus, New York, according to a news release from the Hartford, Conn.-based insurer.
"We have stated that continued growth for Aetna will include strategic diversification of our products, services and global opportunities," said Chief Financial Officer and Senior Executive Vice President Joseph Zubretsky, who will be Saunders' immediate superior, in the release.
Saunders left Broadlane, a group purchasing organization, in 2008 when a majority ownership in the company was bought by private-equity firm TowerBrook Capital Partners, London. In November, Atlanta-based MedAssets completed a previously announced purchase of Broadlane for $850 million.
