Years of medical expertise came in handy recently for Ellen Kimmel, a school nurse from Nanuet, N.Y., when she had a successful run on the television game show “Jeopardy!”
Outliers: I'll take 'Jeopardy!' winners for $200, Alex
Kimmel appeared on three episodes of the show and took home a total of $38,000, bolstered, at least in part, by her strong performance in a category featuring questions about medical abbreviations, according to a story in the Journal News, a local newspaper.
A lifelong fan of the show, Kimmel auditioned with hundreds of other hopefuls and said she was surprised when she received the call that she had been chosen.
“It was nerve-racking,” she says. “I just wanted to not embarrass myself. I never thought I'd win,” Kimmel told the Journal News. Kimmel, who works at Highview Elementary School in Nanuet, has been a school nurse for 15 years. She said she plans to use her winnings to travel and to pad her savings.
