Insurer Humana and provider Norton Healthcare are partnering to develop an accountable care organization. The ACO will be the first launched around Louisville, Ky., where both companies are located, according to a news release.
No financial details were provided regarding the ACO's startup costs, but the Humana-Norton partnership will join four other ACOs participating in the Brookings-Dartmouth ACO Pilot Project. The other participants are the Carilion Clinic, Roanoke, Va.; Tucson (Ariz.) Medical Center; HealthCare Partners Medical Group, Torrance, Calif.; and Monarch HealthCare, Irvine, Calif.
Through the partnership, Humana and Norton will work to coordinate patient care and reduce delivery costs at Norton-owned patient-care sites, including four hospitals in Louisville, according to the release. Officials said they aim to promote better use of preventive screening tests and vaccines, improved coordination in the management of chronic illnesses and appropriate use of generic drugs to lower costs.
Brookings-Dartmouth will provide Norton and Humana with technical and strategic support during the implementation of the ACO model.
