David Kapaska, D.O., was named regional president and CEO of Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. He succeeds Fred Slunecka, who held the post of regional president since 1989 and has been promoted to COO for the entire 14-hospital Avera system. Kapaska, 61, becomes the 16th administrator in the hospital's 100-year history, and previously worked as its senior vice president of medical affairs. He is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and served as a pilot before entering the medical and business arenas, according to a news release. Before becoming a hospital administrator, Kapaska had a family medicine practice for 10 years. Kapaska earned his medical degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa, and has an MBA from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
