Cardiologist Jerome Granato, M.D., was named the new chief medical officer at Excela Health, a three-hospital, Greensburg, Pa.-based system. Granato, 57, starts Jan. 3, 2011; he will replace Carol Fox. Fox has been serving as interim CMO since the departure of Ralph Capone in May 2009 and will continue as assistant CMO. Granato has worked at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh for 23 years, most recently as director of the cardiac fellowship training program. He also has held the posts of coronary-care-unit medical director and department of medicine vice chairman. Granato has also worked as the coronary-care-unit director at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Presbyterian and as a University of Pittsburgh assistant professor of medicine. He earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, and a master's of business administration degree from the Northwestern University Kellogg Graduate School of Business in Evanston, Ill. Johns Hopkins University Press published Granato's book "Living with Coronary Heart Disease" in November 2008. As CMO at Excela, Granato will be responsible for quality of care, patient safety and medical staff governance, according to a news release from the system.
