More oversight is planned on Capitol Hill to investigate the reasons behind health insurance premium increases.
In a letter to major insurance companies, Democratic leaders on the Senate Finance Committee called for more transparency in the calculations of premium increases, indicating they would not tolerate false statements about the impact of the new healthcare law on premiums.
“Some carriers are looking to raise rates even further in 2011, while blaming the patient protections in the Affordable Care Act for these cost increases. This is irresponsible and unacceptable,” wrote Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), chair of the finance panel's Health Care Subcommittee. Rockefeller also chairs the Senate Commerce, Science & Transportation Committee.
