Future success will depend on teamwork and the willingness of everyone on the surgical team to try it, and then stay with it for every patient, every time. With the participation of the WHO and the Joint Commission, the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses, known as AORN, developed tools and resources to support the perioperative nurse's desire to champion the consistent use of time out. AORN promoted National Time Out Day in June to remind the entire surgical team of its importance.
The AORN Comprehensive Surgical Checklist supports a facility's need to use a single checklist and it includes the safety checks outlined in the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist, while also meeting the safety checks within the Joint Commission's Universal Protocol. And to support IT infrastructure investments in facilities, the checklist content is embedded in AORN Syntegrity, a standardized framework for electronic health-record systems and nursing documentation systems. With teamwork and a willingness to take time out to try it, the checklist can be used in many more ORs in the U.S.
