Gregory Simone, M.D., was fired from his post as president and CEO of WellStar Health System, a five-hospital system based in Marietta, Ga. WellStar's trustees voted to terminate Simone, effective immediately, during a Sept. 2 board meeting, according to a brief statement from the health system. Simone, a cardiologist, joined WellStar in 2007 from Cardiovascular Medicine, Marietta, where he served as president and CEO for 27 years. He ranked No. 20 on Modern Healthcare and Modern Physician's 2010 list of the 50 Most Powerful Physician Executives in Healthcare. WellStar declined to provide additional information about factors that may have led to Simone's sudden termination. Jim Budzinski, the system's executive vice president and chief financial officer, will step in as acting president and CEO until Simone's successor is chosen, a spokeswoman said. Budzinski joined WellStar in 2008. Bonnie Wilson, WellStar's executive vice president and general counsel, is also on the way out. She recently received notice that her contract would not be renewed, WellStar said in the statement. The system did not comment on whether the two high-level departures were related.
