HCA, Nashville, said it has hired Thomas Garthwaite, a physician, to be chief operations officer of its clinical services group, effective June 1.
Garthwaite, 62, will report to Jonathan Perlin, another physician who is president of the clinical services group and HCA's chief medical officer. Like Perlin, Garthwaite served as undersecretary for health in the Veterans Affairs Department; in Garthwaite's case, that was from 1999 to 2002, during an eight-year stint with the VA.
Garthwaite has been executive vice president and CMO of Catholic Health East, Newtown Square, Pa., since 2006. From 2002 to 2006, Garthwaite was director and CMO of the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. He earned his medical degree at Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, and trained in internal medicine and endocrinology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, where he eventually became an associate professor of medicine and associate dean.
