Michael Schatzlein, 59, will end 16 years as an executive with Lutheran Health Network, Fort Wayne, Ind., effective June 4, to be the new president and CEO of St. Thomas Health Services, Nashville, according to the health network. Schatzlein first came to Fort Wayne in 1980 as a physician in charge of building an open-heart surgery program, Lutheran Health Network said. Schatzlein replaces Patrick Madden, who was president and CEO of another Ascension Health system, Sacred Heart Health System, Pensacola, Fla., and Gulf Coast/North Florida market leader when he took the helm at St. Thomas on an interim basis. Madden retired from those positions on Jan. 1, according to Ascension. Madden replaced Jim Houser, who announced his resignation in February 2009 amid heavy physician criticism of potential cost-cutting moves that were in response to the recession. Two other executives left the system the following week. … Catholic Health East, Newtown Square, Pa., named physician Michael McCoy its new chief medical information officer to collaborate with other departments in electronic health-record implementation for the system. McCoy was most recently president and CEO of Physician Technology Services, Nashville. He joins the system in a newly created role. CHE declined to provide McCoy's age. … HCA-HealthOne, Denver, a joint venture of Nashville-based HCA and the Colorado Health Foundation, said Jennifer Alderfer has been promoted to CEO of North Suburban Medical Center, Thornton, Colo. Alderfer, 35, had been COO of North Suburban since 2006. Alderfer replaced Todd Steward, who is now the CEO of another HCA joint venture hospital, St. David's South Austin Medical Center, Austin, Texas. … Ivette Estrada, 64, has retired as executive vice president and CEO of Chicago's Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center, a position she held for the past nine years. John Short assumed interim leadership of the hospital May 1. Short, 54, previously was senior vice president of operations and COO at Resurrection Medical Center, Chicago. Neither facility is among the Catholic system's two hospitals slated to be sold to for-profit Vanguard Health Systems, Nashville. … Via Christi Health, Wichita, Kan., said it has chosen Kevin Strecker to be the CEO of the Via Christi Hospital that it is building west of Wichita, scheduled to open in August. Strecker, 40, most recently served as vice president of operations. Strecker's appointment was effective May 17.
M. Edward Sellers, 65, will retire as CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina effective Aug. 1 after 18 years but will remain as chairman, a post he has held since 2001, the South Carolina Blues said. David Pankau, 46, will be promoted to CEO from COO and will retain his title as president, the insurer said.
