The nation's fastest growing labor union has elected a healthcare expert to be its next president.
The Service Employees International Union selected Mary Kay Henry, head of the union's healthcare division, at its meeting on Saturday. She replaces Andy Stern, who is leaving after 14 years of sometimes divisive leadership of the 2.2 million member union.
In a statement, Henry says she will remain committed to improving the lives of struggling workers and work on building grass-roots support. Henry's election was expected after her main rival for the post, Anna Burger, dropped out of the contest last month.
Stern earlier this year announced his intent to step down from the union.
