The CMS is instructing its contractors to hold the payment of claims submitted for services delivered on or after April 1 for 10 business days—the maximum amount of time it is able to hold claims. This will ensure that if Congress acts when it returns from spring recess, “providers will not be hit by a payment reduction,” a CMS spokesman stated.
The agency found itself in the same position in the beginning of March, when the Senate delayed on a previous temporary measure to prevent the SGR cut.
“This is causing severe instability for seniors and physicians, causing problems for vulnerable patients who rely on Medicare and TRICARE,” J. James Rohack, president of the American Medical Association, said in a statement last week.
