Outliers likes to think we keep on top of all the latest trends and fads that ripple through the industry, but we seem to have been oblivious to one that appears to be a popular target for plastic surgeons: new moms.
Cosmetic surgery sees ample opportunities for what one health system described as procedures to “improve upon the natural changes of a mother's body,” if an unscientific Google search of “mommy makeover” is any indication. That search also brings up a lot of results for plastic surgeons in Southern California. Hmm.
Outliers was alerted to the trend by Geisinger Health System's pitch to new moms in early February. “Motherhood is incredibly rewarding for a woman, but carrying a child can take a toll on her body,” says the director of plastic and reconstructive surgery for Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, Pa. Scars, wrinkles and loose skin can be banished with anything from facial peels to head-to-toe “contouring,” says the promotion, which goes on to make allowances for the life-altering demands of motherhood. “Mothers can even come in for a consultation several years after childbirth, once the demands of a new lifestyle have slowed down.”
