Anthem Blue Cross said it would raise the out-of-pocket costs for its coverage for Californians up to 39%—a byproduct of overall higher healthcare costs. But the move has gained the ire of state and federal officials.
The White House has used the increase to bolster its case for healthcare reform. “If we don't act, this is just a preview of coming attractions,” Obama said during a rare, unannounced news conference at the White House. “Premiums will continue to rise for folks with insurance, millions more will lose their coverage altogether, our deficits will continue to grow larger.”
Meanwhile, California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner called on Anthem's parent, WellPoint, to postpone the rate increase, allowing the state proper time for an independent actuarial review.
