As someone who has designed and sold computer and software technologies to various industries for several decades, I am puzzled by the expectation that clinicians adopt electronic health-record systems without tangible benefits and the payback other industries expect from these kinds of investments. The "stimulus" incentives hardly cover the cost of the EHR and the resulting disruption they create, over many months. Customer—patient—satisfaction also takes a hit when the clinician is focused on a PC instead of connecting with the patient.
EHR systems might still benefit from paper
I have studied medical office work flows for a couple of years and believe very little should be changed because the current work flow serves the patient and clinician quite well. Paper offers a very flexible medium for entering data in "nonsequential" random order and facilitates correcting information and adding missing information "on the fly." EHRs should incorporate paper as an option for data input.
