Science Applications International Corp., McLean, Va., says former acting U.S. Surgeon General Steven Galson, M.D., joined the company as senior vice president of civilian health operations. According to the company, its Civilian Health Operation business unit provides solutions to local, state, federal and commercial health organizations to help prevent, prepare for, detect and respond to public health threats. The operation has about 600 employees who are experts in life sciences, quantitative analysis, drug development, commercial pharmaceutical regulatory compliance, and research and product development capabilities in areas including cancer treatment, bio-threat analysis and pre-clinical vaccines. In addition to serving previously as acting U.S. surgeon general, Galson, 53, has served as the acting assistant secretary of health and the director of the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. A graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Galson later earned his medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and a master of public health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. He is board-certified in general preventive medicine, public health and occupational medicine.
