The “historic passage” of the healthcare reform bill by the Senate falls short of my expectations. As a practicing OB/GYN, I hoped and lobbied for the addition of tort-reform language to this bill. The cost of defensive medical practices plays a significant role in the high cost of medicine.
Tort reform should be part of legislation
Doctors in my home state of Oklahoma are discontinuing practicing obstetrics and moving to states that have passed tort reform in an effort to continue practicing a specialty that they love.
Fewer doctors are choosing OB/GYN as a specialty in an effort to reduce their work hours and liability. I urge our lawmakers as they try to blend the House and Senate legislation to add reasonable tort-reform language to this bill. Not only will it likely increase the number of healthcare providers entering the specialty of obstetrics, it will have significant financial impact by reducing the practice of defensive medicine that has become the “norm” in this specialty.

As the co-owner of a small clinic, our expectation is that 100,000 doctors will leave medical practice, increasing the load on those that remain.
We are considering not accepting any insurance, strictly cash pay.
The state has just taken over every private citizen and legal resident in the U.S. If Unkle Samshevik can force you to buy health insurance, that, in the government’s opinion you need, you must have, whether you want it, or like it, or believe it, or can afford it, or not.
The state can now force or fine—and eventually imprison—those who will not comply. You may laugh now, but it is merely a matter of time; the camel’s nose is under the tent.
Has anyone met people who are pleased with government-run medical care, i.e. Medicaid, Medicare, VA, U.S. military healthcare? We receive patients from all of the above except Medicaid, who come to us, even though they have government coverage because the experience is so terrible!
Anyone who believes this act was “reform” is stupid and they have been deceived.
Welcome to Amerika, comrades.
