Alec Cunningham has been promoted to CEO of WellCare Health Plans, a Tampa, Fla.-based managed-care company.
Cunningham named CEO at WellCare
Cunningham, 42, is currently president of WellCare's Florida and Hawaii division. He will become CEO effective Dec. 28, and takes over the position from Heath Schiesser, who announced in June he would leave the company once a successor was found.
Cunningham joined WellCare in 2005 as vice president of business development, adding new Medicaid contracts in Georgia, Hawaii and Ohio. Prior to joining WellCare, he was vice president of business development and compliance at WellPoint, where he developed and managed products for state-sponsored programs. Prior to that, he worked on staff for the governor of Oklahoma and at the Oklahoma Health Care Authority, participating in the development of the state's Medicaid managed-care program.
“Alec is a proven leader who has earned the respect and confidence of his colleagues and our board of directors, as well as our provider partners, government clients and regulators,” said Charles Berg, WellCare's executive chairman, in a written statement.
WellCare has about 2.3 million members nationwide.
