Using something like the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award healthcare criteria, ISO 9001, or the Automotive Industry Action Group's Business Operating Systems for Health Care Organizations document would improve their system. The requirements for continual improvement would contribute to sustainability, too.
Value-stream mapping and just identifying all processes so they can be reviewed for efficiency and outcomes allows the organization to eliminate much of the wasted steps. Applying Lean thinking as these processes are reviewed has paid big dividends to many who have done this.
This would help offset the cost of IT/EHR programs and, in the long run, give a return on investment.
With the new emphasis on Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act-type personal-health information protection, people would be able to incorporate security aspects to all processes where applicable.
Food for thought before spending big bucks and lots of people's time.
