Sebelius appointed Marjorie McColl Petty as director of Region VI, covering Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Most recently, McColl Petty served as director of public affairs and consumer protection for the Kansas Corporation Commission since 2003. She also chairs the board of directors of the Delta Dental of Kansas, a position she has had since August 2008.
Meanwhile, Judy Baker—a former member of the Missouri House of Representatives—will be responsible for Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska as the director of Region VII.
Susan Johnson was appointed director of Region X, which encompasses Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Since 1997, Johnson has served as the director of the King County Health Action Plan for the Public Health Department in Seattle and King County. In that role, she has developed and implemented programs addressing the healthcare needs of children, teenagers and people with chronic illnesses. From 1984 until 1995, Johnson served as director of governmental relations for the Washington State Council of the Service Employees International Union.
In a news release about the appointments, Sebelius said these four women are well-suited for their positions because of their understanding of the department’s most important issues, as well as their understanding of the people and institutions in their respective regions.
