Health Management Associates, Naples, Fla., said it has executed a definitive agreement to acquire Sparks Health System, Fort Smith, Ark., which primarily consists of 295-bed Sparks Regional Medical Center. Neither HMA nor Sparks revealed the terms of the deal. HMA said it expects the deal to close by Nov. 30, which would give the company 55 hospitals in 15 states, including two in Arkansas. The company operates 103-bed Summit Medical Center, Van Buren, Ark., which is about seven miles from Sparks Regional. HMA and Sparks made an antitrust filing with the Federal Trade Commission, which took no action by the Oct. 14 deadline to do so, according to a spokesman for Sparks.
