Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine said she would help move a broad health reform package out of the Senate Finance Committee, but added that her vote could change as legislation emerges after further debate.
Though she cited areas of concern that remained, primarily over affordability, an expansion of Medicaid and provider cuts, Snowe – who has been courted hard by Democrats from Capitol Hill all the way over to the White House--said she would support the package.
“But when history calls, history calls,” Snowe told committee members prior to her vote. “And I happen to think that the consequences of inaction dictate the urgency of Congress to take every opportunity to demonstrate its capacity to solve the monumental issues of our time.”
Snowe will likely be the only committee Republican to vote for the bill, which is scheduled to occur after 2 pm ET.
