A Colorado Springs hospital and police are investigating the apparent theft of Social Security numbers and other personal information of 175 patients.
Social Security numbers stolen from Colo. hospital
Penrose Hospital officials believe someone took a binder containing a list of people who received outpatient ultrasounds in August and early September. They don't believe the binder was misplaced. Centura Health, which oversees Penrose, is paying for a year of identity theft protection for the affected patients.
The health system is no longer keeping the information on paper for any department. Locks were changed for the imaging department and new locking cabinets were installed. The hospital also contacted federal officials who oversee medical privacy law.
