Health Management Associates and Tenet Healthcare Corp. both reported higher operating earnings for the second quarter ended June 30.
HMA, Naples, Fla., said its improved emergency-department operations fueled a volume gain of 5.1% for hospitals in continuing operations in the second quarter compared with the year-ago quarter. Net income was $32.6 million for the quarter compared with $17.1 million in 2008's second quarter. Revenue was up 4.5%, to $1.16 billion. HMA also said control of labor costs helped to offset an increase in uncompensated care.
