Providence Health & Services, Seattle, has named Peter Spitzer, M.D., chief medical information officer.
Spitzer, whose age was unavailable at deadline, will oversee clinical information systems at the Providence operations in Southern California in the newly created role. Hospitals in the region include Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, Burbank, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, San Fernando, and Providence Tarzana (Calif.) Medical Center.
Providence Health & Services owns, leases, sponsors or contract manages 26 acute-care facilities in five Western states.
For the past 35 years, Spitzer has served a variety of CIO, chief technology officer and teaching positions. He is a computer scientist and physician trained at Harvard Medical School and MIT.
"This is an important step for Providence as we aim to keep up on the latest technology to improve our patient care through the best possible record-keeping, data collection and information systems," said Myron Berdischewsky, chief medical officer for the not-for-profit organization's California region.
