Scott Whalen is resigning his post as president and CEO of St. Vincent's HealthCare, which operates two acute-care hospitals in Jacksonville, Fla., as a subsidiary of 77-hospital Ascension Health, St. Louis. Whalen, 56, was replaced by Howard Watts, who will serve as interim president and CEO of St. Vincent's while a national search is conducted for a permanent successor.
Whalen was named president and CEO in July 2007, following a stint as chief operating officer with the Jacksonville system. During his tenure as top executive, St. Vincent's realigned its workforce and integrated a hospital into the system. He said in a news release he's ready to explore other opportunities within and outside of Ascension. Whalen joins more than a dozen of hospital CEOs who have left their jobs in recent weeks.
