St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md., said Robert Lovell will assume leadership as interim CEO of the Catholic Health Initiatives hospital on June 29. Lovells appointment comes after the departure of CEO John Tolmie and two other executives, who were placed on leave months ago and then resigned in May. St. Joseph Medical Center continues to decline to name them or confirm their names, including Tolmies, citing confidentiality of personnel matters. The others, according to published reports, were Chief Operating Officer Sylvia Moore and Vice President of Operations Lucy Shamash. The 332-bed hospital has said it is cooperating with a federal investigation into its relationship with an unnamed physician group. Lovell will report both to the hospitals board and to Beth OBrien, a senior vice president and group executive officer for Denver-based CHI who has been leading a restructuring effort at the Towson hospital. Last year Lovell served as interim chief operating officer of Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia and from 2005-08 was executive vice president and chief operating officer of Kaleida Health, Buffalo, N.Y.
