Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center said John Ferguson will retire as president and CEO on July 1. Ferguson has served in those roles for 23 years. Robert Garrett, the hospitals executive vice president and chief operating officer, was named acting president and CEO.
I am confident this will be a seamless transition as we consult with key members of the medical centers team before we turn our attention to the search for a new president, J. Fletcher Creamer, chairman of the hospitals board of governors, said in a news release about the changes. Creamer also said Garrett will be among the candidates in the hospitals search for a permanent successor to Ferguson, a Modern Healthcare Up & Comer in 1988.
Garrett joined Hackensack University Medical Center in 1981 as an administrative resident and became executive vice president and COO in 1990. A graduate of Binghamton University in New York, Garrett earned a masters degree in health administration from Washington University in St. Louis.
