Catholic Healthcare West, San Francisco, is in the middle of a years-long revamp of its approach to collecting and managing patient financial data, according to a breakout presentation by two CHW executives at the Healthcare Financial Management Associations Annual National Institute in Seattle.
Key to the new approach is a patient scoring system, which 41-hospital CHW helped develop. The system is called PARO, which stands for Payment Assistance Rank Ordering. Now being sold commercially by a company separate from CHW, the PARO approach does not focus on likelihood to pay, the basis for many credit scores. The PARO score is focused on ability to pay, said Ryan Thompson, senior director of revenue services for CHW.
