If its hunting season for healthcare reform, hospitals are the deer. So said two executives with Stevens & Lee, a Reading, Pa.-based law firm. The executives addressed a standing-room-only crowd of about 350 people at their Washington Update session at the Healthcare Financial Management Associations Annual National Institute in Seattle.
In the minds of federal lawmakers, the hospital industry is where the money is, said Nancy Bell, senior managing director of healthcare finance at the firm. You guys have a target on your back, she said. On June 13, President Barack Obama announced plans to seek $313 billion in Medicare and Medicaid spending reductions over the next 10 years to help finance healthcare reform. Most of that money would come from payments to providers.
