Authorities in South Carolina and Georgia are searching for a wounded suspect who walked away from the Augusta hospital where he was being treated while on a smoke break.
Hurt suspect on smoke break flees Ga. hospital
Multiple media outlets reported Tuesday that a warrant had been issued, but not served for 40-year-old Terrance Riley of Columbia. Deputies have accused Riley of helping three others in the shooting death of 34-year-old Jerry Tyler on Friday. Tyler was accidentally shot by one of the other suspects.
Aiken County Sheriff's Office Capt. Troy Elwell says officers did not guard Riley because they thought he was near death and the Medical College of Georgia didn't tell police that his condition improved.
Hospital officials say they can't restrict the movement of patients who have not been formally charged.
