Wholesale prices for hospitals rose 0.2% in May after a similarly slight increase of 1% in April, the Bureau of Labor Statistics preliminary producer price index shows. For the same month in 2008, the hospital price index was flat. For the 12-month period ended in May, wholesale prices for hospitals increased 2.6% compared with 3.4% for the year-ago period.
Physician wholesale prices dropped 0.1% in May compared with a 0.1% increase in April, preliminary figures show. The physician index was also flat in May 2008. For the year that ended last month, the physician producer price index increased 2% compared with 1% the prior 12 months.
