Duke University Health System, Durham, N.C., said that Kevin Sowers was named CEO of its flagship hospital, Duke University Hospital, Durham. Sowers, 47, has been interim CEO of the hospital since June 2008 when its former CEO, William Fulkerson, was promoted to head the Duke system as senior vice president for clinical affairs. Sowers has worked for the Duke system for 24 years, most recently as COO of Duke University Hospital. Jeff Balser, newly installed as CEO of Vanderbilt University Medical Center and as vice chancellor for health affairs for Vanderbilt University, announced four promotions to fill his leadership team. John Manning, 51, was appointed associate vice chancellor for health affairs, chief administrative officer for Vanderbilt University Medical Center and senior associate dean for operations and administration. Balser named C. Wright Pinson, 57, as the new deputy vice chancellor for health affairs, CEO of the hospitals and clinics and senior associate dean for clinical affairs. Gordon Bernard, also 57, was named associate vice chancellor for research and senior associate dean for clinical sciences in the School of Medicine. Susan Wente, 47, was named associate vice chancellor for research and senior associate dean for biomedical sciences. R. Bruce James was named president and CEO of Union Hospital, Dover, Ohio. He is set to begin the job July 6, replacing William Harding, 66, who is retiring after 29 years in the position. In April, James became CEO of Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County, Rock Springs, Wyo., where he had been interim CEO since January.
