Scott Shreevea physician informaticist, healthcare blogger and co-founder of open-source healthcare information technology systems developer Medsphere Systems Corp.is asking the health IT community to join in a blog rally Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. ET to brainstorm on setting the contest parameters for a proposed multimillion dollar competition for healthcare improvement.
The not-for-profit X Prize Foundation, announced its intention to form the competition last year, with a goal of offering at least $10 million in prize money to the first team to achieve a specific goal set by the foundation, according to a news release issued at the time of the launch.
The foundation seeks to incite innovation by tapping into the competitive and entrepreneurial spirit of individuals and teams to revolutionize industries for the benefit of humanity, the release said. It has previously launched competitions to build an automobile capable of traveling 100 miles on a gallon of gasoline, and for suborbital flight, lunar exploration and rapid sequencing of the human genome.
In an e-mail, Shreeve wrote: The Healthcare X Prize team has released an Initial Prize Design and is actively seeking public comment. We are hoping, and encouraging everyone at every opportunity, to engage in this effort to help design a system of care that can produce dramatic breakthroughs at both an individual vitality and community health level.
