Healthcare groups applauded the appointment of New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden as the new director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, saying he has the experience and toughness necessary to fight infectious disease.
Friedens experience and dedication to public health make him an excellent choice to lead the CDC. As a strong public health system is the foundation for a healthy America, APHA looks forward to working with Dr. Frieden in the months ahead as we think broadly about how to improve health in our nation, Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association, said in a written statement.
Jeff Levi, executive director of Trust for Americas Health, characterized Frieden, a physician, as a bold leader who has the courage to shake up the status quo if science and evidence show that change needs to happen. He doesnt shy away from the tough problems.
