Payment models that reward quality and patient safety are essential to comprehensive healthcare reform, said Americas Health Insurance Plans, the lobbying arm of the insurance industry.
The group is touting pay-for-performance programs implemented by private health plans across the country, which are outlined in a new report. AHIP says that private health insurers are boosting adherence to evidence-based treatment and reducing emergency room visits through these payment reforms.
Health plans are pioneering the types of innovative approaches necessary to move to a 21st century, evidence-based healthcare system, Karen Ignagni, president and CEO of AHIP, said in a written statement.
The group said such innovations have not yet taken hold in public programs such as Medicare.
