Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will have to wait at least another week for her Cabinet post. Republican senators this morning blocked a move to vote on the confirmation of the governor as HHS secretarystill widely expected to happen despite the delay.
In a brief exchange on the Senate floor, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) pushed for a vote on the nomination today, but was rebuked by his Republican counterpart, Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who said that members of his party needed more time to consider her nomination.
The Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday voted 15-8 to move forward on the nomination of Sebelius to the nations top healthcare post. Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) said that he expects Democratic leaders to file a procedural measure to hold a vote next week.
GOP members said they were troubled by some of Sebelius answers to questions put to her in writing. Additionally, Republican senators earlier this week said that her ties to a doctor who performed late-term abortions also were a factor. I usually vote for the presidents nominees and wanted to vote for her, but I thought she wasnt forthcoming, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), said Tuesday.
