I am concerned that the technology money will only be spent for "medical" technology and not "business" technology. In 1996, the Administrative Simplification Compliance Act was passed that included the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA, business transactions. It was intended that these electronic transactions would significantly reduce administrative costs.
It is now 13 years later and the savings have not materialized. I would like to see some of this technology funding be allocated to the business operations as well as to the EHR; however with a physician in charge the business component may not be addressed. The results may lead to improvements in the quality of care but I feel the opportunities to reduce costs may not be a physicians priority.
