Two schools in Houston, Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine, have signed a memorandum of understanding to formalize negotiations for a possible merger.
The leaders of the two schools informed students and staff in a March 26 letter that after months of informal talks, both schools believe they could benefit from a merger and create one of the worlds leading research universities. The talks also yielded several areas of concerns that will need to be resolved through the formal negotiations, but spokespeople for the schools would not elaborate.
The letter says community members opinions will be solicited in coming months. The success of any merger, or any closer affiliation, will also depend significantly on how effectively we plan for and manage its implementation, the letter says.
