Richard Hawkins, M.D., has been appointed to the newly created position of senior vice president for professional and scientific affairs for the American Board of Medical Specialties, the Evanston, Ill.-based organization that oversees certification of physician specialists. Hawkins, 52, is an internist and infectious disease subspecialist. He starts Feb. 1, and will be promoting the science of ABMS Maintenance of Certification and certification in context of advancing physician assessment programs, a news release said. Hawkins is currently the vice president for assessment programs at the National Board of Medical Examiners. He is also on the ABMS Committee on Oversight and Monitoring of Maintenance of Certification, which reviews reports from the 24 ABMS member boards and confirms compliance with maintenance of certification guidelines.
