On behalf of Modern Healthcares editorial staff, Id like to say happy New Year and thank you to all our readers. With your support, 2008 was a great year for us here, and we expect an even better editorial year in 2009.
After we close the last print issue of the year, like we did on Dec. 19, 2008, with the Dec. 22/29, 2008 issue, I like to recap the year for our editorial staff. As we crank out story after story, its easy to forget how much weve accomplished in the previous 12 months. It also helps explain why many of us are a little grayer and in need of some extra cheer around the holidays.
Here are some of the highlights I shared with our 25-member editorial staff. I like to call it Modern Healthcares own By the Numbers. We published, posted or sent: Fifty-one regular weekly print issues, three print supplements, 251 issues of the Daily Dose, 251 issues of Health IT Strategist, 24 issues of Modern Physician, 111 Modern Physician Alerts, 109 Modern Healthcare Alerts, 57 HITS Alerts, 66 podcast interviews, 20 videotaped interviews, 46 Reporters Notebooks columns and two CEO roundtable panel discussions.
But as much as we like to look back, take a breath and say Job well done, we have even more in store to serve our readers information needs in the year ahead.
At the top of that list are a number of new editorial sections on Modern Healthcare Online, our Web site at modernhealthcare.com. One is Healthcare in Transition: The New Administration, where were tracking all the twists and turns in the push for national healthcare reform. Another is Healthcare Finance: From Crisis to Recovery, where were covering how the current economic crisis is affecting the healthcare industry and how each segment of the industry is coping with its own unique financial challenges.
We created a new International News section on the site, where we post our coverage as well as coverage from other major publications of healthcare issues overseas. Next to that section is the electronic version of our popular print Outliers section called Outliers Online. There you can find additional asides and insides to make our readers smileor shake their headsas they go about their daily and more serious responsibilities.
Also on our home page is a new section devoted exclusively to our healthcare information technology coverage. There youll find stories from Health IT Strategist as well as other IT stories that didnt make it into that days edition of HITS. Readers also will find similar expanded content on Modern Physician Online, Modern Physicians Web site at modernphysician.com.
Well be serving our readers information needs with additional multimedia offerings, including more video, more podcasts and a new webinar series linked to our special reports in print. The site will be increasing the networking opportunities for readers as well as new venues for readers to comment on stories and issues. And well be serving our readers information needs with more events like our Leadership Forum series. The first one, Transforming Healthcare through Clinical Informatics, is set for Feb. 17-19 in Nashville. To register for the conference, please go to modernhealthcare.com/leadershipforum.
As I was ticking off everything we did editorially in 2008, we had the pleasure of having Karen Petitte, our former managing editor and former editor of Modern Physician, in the Chicago newsroom with us for a holiday visit. As she noted in her own understated manner, Modern Healthcare has come a long way.
And as Ive written previously, it was Karen who years ago provided us with advice thats guided us editorially ever since. She said, If there wasnt a Modern Healthcare, someone would have to invent it. But like all good inventors, we never stop trying to improve our creation. Heres to a great 2009. Thank you.
