The Joint Commission announced the recipients of its 2008 Ernest Amory Codman Awards for effective use of outcomes measurements in quality and patient safety. The winners are: Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, N.C.; Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center; Mission Hospital, Mission Viejo, Calif.; and Novant Health, Winston-Salem, N.C.
The commission also named the late Shukri Khuri as an individual award winner. Khuri, a physician, oversaw the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program in the Veterans Affairs Department and was instrumental in implementing that outcomes-based measurement program in the private sector, the commission said. Khuri died Sept. 26.
The awards are named for Boston surgeon Ernest Amory Codman, (1869–1940), a pioneer in the field of outcomes research, and will be presented Nov. 19 during the commissions National Conference on Quality and Patient Safety in Chicago. -- by Jean DerGurahian
