Opelousas (La.) General Health System and 171-bed Doctors Hospital of Opelousas have signed a joint letter of intent for Opelousas General to purchase Doctors by year-end or early in 2009. Additional details were not available, according to a spokeswoman for 163-bed Opelousas General.
DHO and OGHS have explored avenues by which both hospitals could work together to improve access to high quality, efficient and affordable healthcare services to the community, Phil Young, chief executive officer of Doctors Hospital, said in a news release. Through that process we realized we share common missions and philosophies in the delivery of healthcare services, he said, adding that a consolidation of the two institutions will benefit the community in ways the hospitals could not if they remained separate.
The letter of intent is nonbinding, but negotiations are very positive and promising, according to the news release. -- by Jessica Zigmond
