In response to Jennifer Lubell's CMS rule includes new e-Rx incentive program:
The payment boost represents almost a 12% spread from what was originally planned (i.e., the 10% cut), which should be welcome relief. A percentage increase in a fee-for-service rule will mean more to those with high-volume practices.
At any rate, the idea of using incentives to encourage use of e-prescribing and the adoption of electronic health records is certainly one way to increase the use of more-effective and -efficient technology into the healthcare arena. What is lacking is coordination and direction in the development of EHR standards, protocols and definitions. I applaud the government for recognizing the need to introduce the technology, but we also need to push for a higher degree of coordination and uniformity. Creativity is a wonderful thing; we need to eventually agree that there are some lowest common denominators or absolutes, devoid of subjectivity, that we should all be willing to adopt.
