During a luncheon briefing at the Medical Group Management Associations annual conference, organization President and Chief Executive Officer William Jessee commented on the upcoming election and said that neither John McCain nor Barack Obama were addressing the core issue behind the healthcare systems woes.
What we pay for rewards the wrong things, Jessee said. If you do the right things and keep people healthy, physicians lose economically. Its a pretty perverse system: The more you do what you're supposed to, the less you're rewarded.
Jessee compared the change that is needed to the work done by engineers who kept pollution out of Lake Michigan by reversing the flow of the Chicago River.
He compared most current healthcare reform efforts and proposals to salmon swimming upstream. Its hard to make progress when everything is flowing in the opposite direction, Jessee said at the meeting in San Diego. -- by Andis Robeznieks
