A laptop computer containing personal information about more than 500 state employees in West Virginia is now in the hands of a thief.
Administration Department spokeswoman Diane Holley said that the laptop was taken from an auditor's vehicle in Charleston. It contained payroll and benefits information for employees of the Health and Human Resource Department's Bureau of Medical Services, Child Support Enforcement division and state Insurance Commission.
The information includes full names or first names and Social Security numbers for 535 employees. But Holley said it likely can't be accessed because it is protected by a password.
