Regarding the passage of the mental-health parity legislation:
I adopted three abused children; two are bipolar with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. My husband and I spend approximately $5,000 a year on their medications, psychiatrist and psychologist. If they require hospitalization during the year, the amount goes up. This illness is so misunderstood, and just managing this illness is stressful on a family. Add the financial burden and it is just more stress. Look at any other disease and people get empathy. Too many times children with mental illness are treated as if they just need to straighten up. Passing this bill will go along way toward acknowledging that people with this illness should not be treated as outcasts.
